Friday Flashback: Blind Melon

In 1993, Blind Melon gave the world "No Rain". A great song with a great video, it was overplayed to death at the time. Fifteen years later, however, looking back on what a truly brilliant song it is, I admit to getting a little weepy when I hear it (maybe the premature death of one of the most underrated singers/songwriters of my generation plays a part in that). Especially this slowed down, psyched-out version from Saturday Night Live:

(If you want to see the original music video, find it here.)

Lyrics:
All I can say is that my life is pretty plain
I like watchin' the puddles gather rain
And all I can do is just pour some tea for two
and speak my point of view
But it's not sane, It's not sane
I just want some one to say to me
I'll always be there when you wake
Ya know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry today
So stay with me and I'll have it made
And I don't understand why I sleep all day
And I start to complain that there's no rain
And all I can do is read a book to stay awake
And it rips my life away, but it's a great escape
escape......escape......escape......
All I can say is that my life is pretty plain
ya don't like my point of view
ya think I'm insane
Its not sane......it's not sane
Lovely.

Unbelievable song by a fantastic group. Speaking of tears...in my opinion, the best song on that album and honestly one of my favorite songs EVER (when times are tough) is 'change', which was the first song Shannon ever wrote. Whenever life is rough (or i think it's rough), i put that track on and cry. Listen to it next time you've hit a rough spot...Shannon sums it up well with his last line "When life is hard, you have to change".

change is a sadly prophetic song though, it always makes me sad when i listen to it. i just discovered blind melon a few weeks ago (i'm 14) and they are amazing. R.I.P. Shannon, and hey thanks for the songs.
